I’m back. For real. Specifically, in a lovely apartment in Brooklyn with tons of light and a fantastic kitchen. After the bike trip and the ranch, Phil and I bravely attempted to survive living in the suburbs while we looked for jobs and an affordable apartment. For the record, I really hate commuting on Metro North and I am much happier to deal with NYC’s subways and buses. Regardless, I’m cooking/baking again and will be posting up pics and recipes soon. In the meantime, take a look at the new kitchen and examine the fliers for two upcoming MiG shows for this week. One is a crazy loft party (BYOB style) and the other is Stereoactive/Hot Rocks party with a ton of good bands and drink specials and free beer. Whoo!
Sadly, this post is not about milkshakes, but I really like ‘em. This post is about the rock-n-roll and a show that is going on tomorrow night in a loft somewhere in Brooklyn that is close to the L train. I will be dancing, rapping and causing a spanking ruckus with the members of Dracula Zombie USA EastCoastAnnex and then trying to get my hands on some Bling Kong members. It is going to be an EVENT!
This post is not about basketball. More like how crazy March is and I’m only in the second week. This weekend MiG had a show on Friday (thanks Jenny!) and then a house party in D.C. which didn’t end until the wee hours of the morning. The morning in which time “sprung” forward. I am exhausted. Thanks a lot to Matt for hosting the party and letting us crash on his floor and Berg for putting it together. Both shows were a lot of fun, but house parties are my favorite places to play. People lose their inhibitions a bit more (could be the free-flowing booze) and are just friendlier before, during and after a set. Nothing great to report on the food front. I was going to take pictures and describe things I ate while on the road for a short while, but it wasn’t worth it. A real tour will warrant some interesting food tidbits, but this jaunt was too short.
Got home and wanted something sweet so I whipped up some chocolate and butterscotch cookies with applesauce subbing in for butter. They came out great. Not too chocolately or heavy, just enough to satisfy a sweet craving. No recipe because I have no idea what the measurements were. I eyeballed the whole thing. There was some wheat pastry flour, regular AP flour, applesauce, a capful of oil, a handful of butterscotch chips, oh and oatmeal, cocoa powder, a bit of brown and white sugar and baking soda. Baking is a science that I sometimes don’t have patience with.
I guess posting frequently is a good idea. A very good post on blogging from Delicious Days which always has fabulous photography and recipes. Happy 2nd blog birthday!
In order to make Combustication more fun and exciting, I may attempt some foodie podcasts or even a cooking vid or two. Depends on how clean my kitchen is and how to record the darn thing.
OH! Before I forget, remember the whole Beg Yr Pardon thing? Maybe? Well it’s kinda DOA, but you can still get your fill of musical nights. Jenny P. has created Hot Rocks, which got a great shoutout in TONY this week. Man in Gray will be playing at the party tonight and there will be free beer and fun. DJs take requests, so come to the Delancey at 8pm with $5.
Also, the music maven D along with Jeff K. have had some awesome music shows with their promotion outfit Neon Lights Presents. Make friends with them!
Also, more food porn up later in the afternoon with a mouthwatering veggie po’boy recipe.
Hope you all voted. I hopped on my bike this morning and sped down 6th Avenue to vote at P.S. something or other and managed to make it to work on time. Hot damn!
Now it’s time to party!
There are so many September birthdays!
Today is D’s. Come out tomorrow night to celebrate with her and the rest of the BYP crew for an amazing show.
This photo is for Daniella and Jeremy - both September babes.
Peanut Butter Cookies can be a slight pain in the butt to make properly. First off, if you want them chewy, I suggest following the tip from Cooking for Engineers (scroll all the way down), which advises you to roll, press em down with a fork and then let sit in the fridge for 15 minutes before baking. I did that with the first couple of batches and it really made a difference. As time went on, and I realized I needed the oven for the brownies, I just shoved the PB cookies into the oven without refrigeration. The cookies came out like normal, slighly crisp, PB cookies. Moral of the story: use the fridge for soft cookies! Hopefully, I’ll be able to take a pic of them tonight and post the recipe tomorrow (left my camera in the band van)
Come out and taste them and tell me what you think tonight. You can also listen to bands, djs (me included, DJ name is “TinaTurns”) and eat brownies (if you’re allergic to nuts) and drink free beer.

Many, many exciting things going on both on the Internet and in the REAL WORLD. Yes, folks, the world beyond the keyboard can be a beautful thing (i.e., see bike photos below). First, second and third things:
1. DraculaZombieUSA will be playing a nutty set over at Fontana’s tonight at 11:30. Fuck Must See TV! This is Must See Music!
2. Ruined Music is up with two sweet stories about songs that still tug at the heartstrings. Check it out and submit your own sob story.
3. I, with the help of D-Hella, Phil and Bryan, will be throwing a party every other Tuesday called “Beg Yr Pardon” at The Delancey on the LES. There’s gonna be bands, baked goods, possibly BBQ and definitely beer and whiskey. There will also be ipod battles, djs and awesome people to meet. Become our friend now, or at your earliest convenience. The first party is on June 6th!!! Tell yr friends!
Anyone interested in forming a band called a-flat? I think the name lends itself to some brilliant (or just annoying) noise rock.
In Lafayette, LA at Cafe Cottage, where we will be playing later tonight. So far the tour has been extremely awesome. The drive from Brooklyn to Bowling Green, KY was somewhat painful…about 14 hours? Maybe? I lost track, but we got there safe and sound and proceeded to ROCK Spencer’s. The people were awesome, big shout out to Greenhouse Poetry, Inc. and Bonnie and everyone who came to the show (especially the dancers) for the hopsitality, awesome setup and kickass houseparty.
Florence, AL was also great. Thanks to Misty for hooking us up and letting us party and sleep at her house. I highly recommend you all check out Western Civ as soon as possible, because they are amazing. It’s really beautiful out here - I wish I could write about driving around here more, but we’re heading out of the wi-fi area to check out downtown Lafayette.
Rock-n-roll. For more up-to-date stuff, check out Rui’s blog here.
