Dear Diary,

Who didn’t have some sort of diary or journal back in the day? Who doesn’t have one now (via weblog or an actual *gasp* book)? What if you put your diary online from when you were 8 or something? This is what you would get. Link via Heather.

Go alma mater!

NYU is in the news quite a bit. First, this article on a student who lived in Bobst Library and then a student caught dealing. Someone was reading some trash on the subway that had that article as the center page photo and an article amounting the girl to a drug czarina. Why? Because it’s such breaking news.

Some crappy photos from the SK/Thermals show shall not be posted this morning since I forgot to upload them last night. Get your fill at Lame Punk Slogan.

While riding the train and listening to a great mix, I came across an interesting article in the Village Voice on graduate school leading to poverty. In light of some protesting done at Columbia, I thought it was worth posting. Plus, it has some good links to grad student blogs and the like.

I Wanna Be Your Joey Ramone!

The Sleater-Kinney and The Thermals show last night kicked my ass. Mary and her friends kicked my ass. Cosmic Cantina seriously kicked my ass. “Kicked” may be the wrong term. I think “spanked” is better as all happenings were highly enjoyable. First was meeting up with Phil, Bryan, Rae, Mary and her friends who were cool enough to make up a song and sing it at Cosmic Cantina in order to get money off our bill. I happened to notice on the menu that people who “performed” got money taken off their meal. We’re not rolling in dough, so we decided to sing “You’re my burrito” to the tune of “You Are My Sunshine.” Phil and Bryan did not join, but the manager gave us all $1 off the bill. A total of $6 off a bill is nothing to sneeze at my friends.

Then it was on to Irving Plaza or Plaza of Clearchannel Evil for the show. The Thermals were spot on with their set, although they tore through it with little banter and no announcement of what songs were new, etc. There songs are excellent though and one guy in the front was going CRAZY, which was nice to see at a NYC show. You can pre-order their upcoming record here and if you didn’t get to see them, fear not for they are playing later this May (27th actually at Mercury Lounge).

Sleater-Kinney busted out a lot of old songs and the crowd loved it. I have not seen that much ass shakin’ at a rock club since MiG played that show with the Unsacred Hearts at Bar 169 (and that was because all 5 people in the audience knew the words to our songs and were our friends). Seriously, I would like to point out that NY audiences (in general) are not for the dancing. They generally fold their arms across their chests and either look rapturously at the band or pretend not to give a shit. I am sick of it and I am so glad that people were dancing last night.

SK was truly on top of their game. I have never seen them have so much fun on stage. They even played the jammiest SK song I have ever heard (does anyone know what that was called?). Carrie was all over the place: flailing her guitar, sneering and hopping around like a little kid on speed…I mean cocoa puffs. Corin’s voice was amazing. It usually is, but last night she really wailed it and worked that high-pitched riot grrrl screech in some of the new songs (including the crazy 7 minute long one). How does she do that? Doesn’t her throat hurt? ArG! Janet was…Janet. She’s one of the most amazing drummers I have ever seen live period.

In related news: apparently Ian McKaye was there. Pics tomorrow kiddos.

How does it feel to be in a meltdown?

The Southpaw gig was a huge success!! Thank you to everyone who came out to the Slope and supported us. You have no idea how cool it was to look out from the stage and see a whole bunch of people rocking out. So thank you. I didn’t manage to get any photos with my camera, but Jenny P. took some amazing ones. Just so you get an idea of what kind of show it was…

Audience participation

is what I like to see.

Obsession

I have become a Craigslist addict. No, not for the entertaining missed connections or free things, but for apartments. I check a few times a day and I’m starting to feel bad about the guy who is trying to rent out this place on 4th Ave. and 22nd Street in the Slope…not gonna happen at that price buddy.

Re-election Song

You know how all presidential candidates have a “theme” song for their relection? C’mon, Clinton had Fleetwood Mac’s “Don’t Stop” as his campaign song.

Well, this one should be Bush’s. Thanks to Jared for bringing it back to my attention.

Ohmigod, this is sooo good. Luckily, every one in this office is out to lunch, so no one heard me cracking up at my desk.

Also came across Orcinus today and Everyday Matters. Good stuff.
